Tom Heaton believes that some fans might come to regret Gareth Southgate’s departure, as the goalkeeper, who was part of the coaching staff during Euro 2024, suggested that people may eventually appreciate the outgoing England manager for having done an “incredible job”.

During his eight years in charge, Southgate guided England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the quarter-finals in the subsequent tournament, and to the finals of both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. However, inconsistent performance in the latter led to a significant number of supporters expressing their frustrations, culminating in Southgate receiving intense criticism. Just two days after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain, he declared his resignation. The Manchester United goalkeeper was questioned on whether some fans might come to lament this decision.

“I truly believe so. Reflecting on [England’s] history, I think he’s transformed its essence,” Heaton remarked. “We were all quite enthusiastic about watching the matches. We were performing well, and he shifted the expectations. I think in hindsight, we will acknowledge it as an ‘incredible job’.”

Heaton expressed that the squad wanted Southgate to continue. “That certainly would be the case,” he affirmed. “It’s uncommon in football to have a group of players, especially those who are used to starting every week, all united in wanting to win for him. He is a leader you’re eager to follow. That’s the mentality; you want to win for him because of his achievements.”

Heaton, currently the third-choice goalkeeper for United, signed a new one-year contract this month. “To be completely honest, the desire to play has always been a significant motivator for me. I had some conversations with a few others, but to be true to my instincts, it didn’t feel right,” he said. “My gut instinct was off. I still have a strong desire to play. Yet, I am hopeful there will be chances to do so. I wouldn’t have signed if I didn’t believe I could contribute.”
