“I recognize that emotions can run high in football, leading people to make comments and statements that are part of the game. I’ve developed a resilience for this, and I’m prepared for more challenges in this role.”
Collum acknowledges that his referees will face ongoing criticism for various decisions.
Nonetheless, he remarked: “When it begins to impact your personal life. When it starts to affect your family. When, heaven forbid, it influences your mental well-being. That’s where we need to exercise caution.
“We openly discuss mental health in sports, and referees are a part of it—at a very elite level—so we must be mindful of how individuals are treated.
“Everyone in football faces criticism, but it’s concerning when such feedback crosses the line into unacceptable territory.”
This season, Scottish referees will implement a system similar to that used at Euro 2024, addressing the harassment of match officials.
“We have a duty to uphold the integrity of the game,” Collum stated. “We aim to attract individuals to refereeing and retain them in the profession.
“I hope people realize that referees are doing everything we can.”
Collum recognizes his new position as “a significant challenge,” but he adds, “it’s been quite enjoyable so far,” expressing satisfaction with the support he has received from clubs, managers, and players.
“I’ve faced my share of criticism as a referee—some warranted, some not according to my perspective,” he continued. “Yet, I believe everyone knew about my passion for the game. My commitment and dedication will be brought to this new role.
“Scottish football is my passion, as is football in general, and I will do everything within my power to enhance not only refereeing but also Scottish football as a whole.”
