  • McKeon has become Australia’s top Olympic champion
  • Simpson notes that McKeon will remain humble about her achievements

Cody Simpson has shared his pride in partner Emma McKeon after she made history for Australian sports on the first day of the Paris Olympics, becoming the country’s most decorated gold medallist.

The 30-year-old secured her fourth gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, bringing her total to six golds, surpassing Ian Thorpe’s legendary record.

Simpson, who nearly qualified for the Olympics himself, celebrated with McKeon after her performance.

“We are all incredibly proud of her,” Simpson remarked on Nine.

“She’ll downplay it, but achieving this is quite extraordinary.”

“Her swim this morning was phenomenal—she was determined to reach the final and stand atop the podium.”

“I’m so proud of her for making it happen.”

Thorpe acknowledged McKeon’s accomplishment in surpassing his own record.

“It’s wonderful,” he noted during the commentary.

“It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person.”

“She is the most accomplished swimmer and the top Olympian in our nation.”

“We need to honor her for both her achievements and her character.”

This moment is a stark contrast to 12 years ago when McKeon just missed out on the London Games and contemplated leaving the sport.

“If I look back at the young me—I was 17 when I missed out on London—there’s no way you could have convinced her that I would achieve this,” McKeon reflected.

“It’s all about perseverance; there are ups and downs. You just keep pushing forward and accomplishing your goals. I can hardly believe where I am now.”

However, McKeon is well aware of the reasons why the Australian women’s 4×100 freestyle team has claimed the last four Olympic gold medals.

“With each passing year, the competition level rises. Looking back at Australia’s history in this event, everyone aspires to be part of it,” she commented.

“As the bar continually rises, it strengthens our team.”

McKeon will continue her campaign in Paris on Sunday with the 100m butterfly.

She is also expected to participate in the 4x100m medley relay and the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
