Jake O’Brien has attributed his decision to join Everton to the influence of international captain Séamus Coleman and the way Sean Dyche fosters the development of young defenders. The 23-year-old finalized his transfer from Lyon to Goodison Park on Tuesday for an initial fee of £17 million.
O’Brien has penned a four-year deal after garnering significant interest from various Premier League teams following a successful season in France. The former Crystal Palace centre-back marks Everton’s fifth summer signing, joining midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, forwards Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrøm, alongside the return of Jack Harrison on loan.
“When the transfer window opened, I had offers from other clubs, but there was only one place I truly wanted to be – Everton,” said the 6ft 6in O’Brien. “They have placed their trust in me, and now it’s my turn to prove myself on the field.”
Everton is clear that O’Brien’s signing does not mean they are willing to part with Jarrad Branthwaite, who has already attracted two rejected bids from Manchester United this summer. O’Brien is eager to follow in Branthwaite’s footsteps under Dyche’s guidance.
“I’m a ball-playing centre-half, quick on my feet, and I enjoy being involved in both attacking and defensive phases. I want to bring some excitement,” O’Brien stated. “You can see how Sean Dyche nurtures young centre-backs and what he’s done for Jarrad. Looking at the impressive season he’s had in the Premier League inspires me. This season, I’m focused on getting as much playing time as possible and helping the team climb the league table.”
Having made his full debut for the Republic of Ireland alongside Coleman in June, O’Brien mentioned that the Everton captain also played a significant role in his decision to join the club. “Séamus has encouraged me to sign with Everton. He is an outstanding individual, a fantastic captain, and it will be a privilege to play under him both here and with Ireland. He is the best captain I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing alongside. His respect extends beyond the club and into the broader football community,” he added.

Everton’s director of football, Kevin Thelwell, expressed: “Jake was highly sought-after after an impressive season with Lyon, and we are thrilled he chose to build his future with Everton. At just 23 years old, he has the potential to grow even further under Sean and his coaching staff. We believe he possesses numerous standout traits that will make him a beloved addition to the club for many years.”
