John Parks, a high school track coach from Oregon, has initiated a lawsuit against his former school district for alleged First Amendment violations, emphasizing the need for a separate division for transgender athletes.
After voicing his concerns about state regulations on transgender athletes by sending a letter to state officials, Parks was dismissed from Lake Oswego High School. He told Fox News Digital that he filed the lawsuit because he believes he did nothing wrong.

On Monday, Parks discussed his perspective on a separate division for transgender athletes during an appearance on “OutKick The Morning” with Charly Arnolt. He recounted an incident where a transgender girl faced boos from the crowd after winning a race, also highlighting advantages that come with physical differences.
“By establishing a separate division, we would encourage more transgender athletes to feel safe in coming forward, as many may hesitate due to fears of unfairness given their physical advantages. Scientific research by organizations like the IOC confirms this,” Parks stated.
“There are reasons these policies exist, and the concern at the high school level is that developmental rates vary among individuals. We have divisions for a reason, and transgender athletes know that if they’ve experienced puberty, they possess certain advantages that remain out of their control,” he added.
“These are important matters as we aim to foster an environment where kids are recognized and celebrated for their achievements rather than being subjected to ridicule – that’s not the essence of sports.”

Parks has previously mentioned sending letters to high-ranking officials with the Oregon Student Activities Association, as well as to state Senator Rob Wagner, including a recent correspondence post-Oregon’s state championships. In these letters, he argued that the current state laws negatively affect girls’ sports.
Parks referred to the hormone testing protocols established by the International Olympic Committee, noting that regulations vary across numerous sports leagues and associations.
“The competition rules set by the OSAA should reflect the standards upheld by international competitors,” Parks wrote in his letter to Wagner. “I propose creating an open division that does not discriminate but ensures opportunities for participation for everyone.”
Parks expressed his surprise at the school district’s decision to terminate his employment.
“I remain puzzled by their choice,” he said. “This has tarnished the reputation of the leadership involved. Many parents have approached me in support, urging me to persevere against the district.”

“The support from coaches at Lake Oswego has been overwhelming, and the more they learn about the situation, the more upset they become regarding the decision made. This has created a divide within the school.”
