The Team USA women’s rugby sevens team achieved a remarkable bronze medal win against Australia on Tuesday, with Spiff Sedrick sprinting the entire field to secure the victory.
This marks the first rugby sevens medal for Team USA — both men’s and women’s teams. The Americans triumphed with a score of 14-12.

Ilona Maher, who has become a social media phenomenon during the Paris Olympics, shared a selfie on X revealing her one-word description of victory: “Delicious,” accompanied by a photo of herself biting her medal.
Maher expressed amazement as Sedrick dodged two would-be tacklers and sped down the field for the try. Additionally, Sedrick successfully executed the conversion.
“I was kind of like, ‘What is this? No way?’ It was surreal because I thought, ‘No, there’s no way this is happening,'” Maher reflected after the match. “And then for her to make the kick as well, and she’s not our designated kicker.”

Maher has emerged as a social media influencer during the Paris Games but faced challenges following the heartbreaking quarterfinals loss to Great Britain. She focused on maintaining her mental sharpness and found that staying lighthearted on social media while concentrating on her sport proved beneficial.
“I wanted to excel in social media while also being a skilled rugby player,” she stated. “That was significant to me. It was essential to demonstrate that I could be amusing but also serious and capable on the field. It was crucial to convey that you can embody multiple facets: strength, beauty, and intellect.”
