- Chelsea has not finished in the top four for the last two seasons
- Results have declined since Todd Boehly became the owner
- A former player has criticized the current situation at the club as a ‘disgrace’
A former Chelsea player is troubled by the current management of the club, calling it a ‘disgrace’.
Following the consortium led by Todd Boehly taking over from Roman Abramovich in 2022, the Blues have invested more than £1bn in new signings.
Despite this financial investment, performance on the field has deteriorated, with Chelsea consistently finishing outside the top four for the last two seasons. This period has also seen the club manage six different coaches, including interim roles, culminating in Enzo Maresca being the latest appointed to revitalize the team.
Frank Leboeuf, who represented Chelsea from 1996 to 2001, expresses deep concern about the ongoing situation and does not expect Maresca to yield immediate results.
‘Some fans might think Chelsea can start fresh next season, but it’s not really a fresh start after spending a billion pounds,’ he stated in an interview with Instant Casino.

He criticized his former club as a ‘disgrace’ and doubts improvements under Todd Boehly
‘The club is free to spend their money as they wish, but as a former player, it pains me to witness the current situation.’
Under Boehly’s leadership, Chelsea has primarily focused on recruiting young talent, investing heavily in numerous teenagers and promising players in their early 20s, such as Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Mykhailo Mudryk.
However, Leboeuf argues that this transfer approach is flawed and believes Chelsea will struggle to contend for the Premier League without acquiring more seasoned players.
He added: ‘The squad has talent, but lacks leaders and reliable players, which poses the main challenge for Enzo Maresca.’
‘While there’s a possibility for Chelsea to secure a cup, like the FA Cup this season, winning the Premier League seems unattainable.
‘If the current trajectory continues, winning a Premier League title will be out of reach; they need experience. It simply won’t work otherwise.
‘When I joined the club, they had spent 26 years without a trophy, and that drought ended only when experienced winners joined.’
Chelsea couldn’t secure victories in their first two pre-season fixtures with Maresca, drawing 2-2 with Wrexham and later losing 4-1 to Celtic.

Leboeuf believes the absence of experienced players is a significant challenge for new manager Enzo Maresca
Nevertheless, they managed to secure their first win against Club America with a comprehensive 3-0 victory on Wednesday.
The team still has three more pre-season matches to prepare for their opening Premier League encounter against Manchester City on August 18, including fixtures against City, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan.
