Manchester United has suffered a major setback as their new £59 million signing Leny Yoro is sidelined for three months, while Rasmus Hojlund is out for six weeks.

Both players exited during the first half of United’s defeat against Arsenal at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday. Yoro has sustained a fractured metatarsal in his left foot, while Hojlund has suffered a hamstring strain.

This news presents a significant challenge for manager Erik ten Hag as the new season approaches. The United coach will likely rely on new £36.5 million signing Joshua Zirkzee to take Hojlund’s place upfront and is expected to intensify efforts to secure another center-back to cover for Yoro.

The 18-year-old French talent recently joined United from Lille just two weeks ago and was participating in his second match for the club against Arsenal when he got injured shortly after the half-hour mark, leaving the pitch immediately after treatment.

When Yoro was seen with crutches and his left foot in a protective boot three days after the match, it raised suspicion that the injury was more grave than initially expected.

Manchester United confirmed on Wednesday that Yoro will be unavailable for three months. However, he intends to remain on the club’s tour of the US and will undergo further assessment upon returning to Manchester next week.

With Lisandro Martinez still not back in training following his participation in the Copa America, Ten Hag may have to rely on either Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, or Victor Lindelof in center defense. Lindelof’s future at Old Trafford has been uncertain, but he may now stay to provide needed depth.

United are also looking to finalize a second center-back signing this summer, having held discussions with Bayern Munich regarding Matthijs de Ligt and having a £50 million bid for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected by Everton.

These setbacks evoke memories of United’s injury troubles on their US tour last summer when Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo sustained injuries that sidelined them until November and December respectively.

Diallo suffered knee ligament damage in the first tour game against Arsenal in New Jersey, which required surgery, while Mainoo injured his foot in the defeat to Real Madrid in Houston and was out for four months.
