- Paul Scholes has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s greatest midfielders
- Surprisingly, he did not select his former captain Roy Keane as the top midfielder at the club
- Scholes opted for Kobbie Mainoo over a former Class of ’92 teammate
Paul Scholes has ranked the greatest midfielders in Manchester United’s history, notably excluding the club’s legendary former captain Roy Keane from the top spot.
During their decade together at Old Trafford, Scholes and Keane formed a strong partnership as United achieved dominance in English football throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Despite their successful collaboration, Scholes doesn’t consider Keane to be the best midfielder in the club’s history.
When tasked with ranking United’s midfielders, Scholes was asked to choose between Keane and Bryan Robson.
After a thoughtful pause, he declared: ‘Bryan Robson. He’s my hero, Bryan Robson.’

Scholes did not put his former captain Roy Keane at the top of the pile

Scholes ranked Bryan Robson above Keane and hailed the former England man as his ‘hero’
Scholes placed Robson at the pinnacle of United midfielders but had also been asked to evaluate numerous other names.
Showcasing loyalty to his Class of ’92 teammate, Nicky Butt, he chose the former England midfielder over himself, along with notable players like World Cup champion Nobby Stiles, Michael Carrick, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Darren Fletcher.
However, when comparing Butt to the current United player Kobbie Mainoo, Scholes quickly favored Mainoo.
Mainoo made a significant impact last season at Old Trafford and played a crucial role for England in their Euro 2024 final run last month.

Yet he somewhat surprisingly picked Kobbie Mainoo over Butt in his final rankings
It’s somewhat unexpected that Scholes favored a player at the start of his career over Butt.
Ultimately, Scholes selected Keane over Mainoo, ranking his former captain above Paul Ince and Juan Sebastian Veron, but giving his final vote to Robson.
