Jonathan Wheatley and Mattia Binotto are set to establish a “dual management” framework for Audi’s Formula 1 team, which will see the Sauber team rebranded in 2026.
The announcement of Wheatley’s impending departure from Red Bull, where he serves as sporting director, was made on Thursday; however, Audi did not provide an initial response.
Shortly thereafter, Audi issued a statement confirming Red Bull’s announcement, clarifying that Wheatley will officially begin his role at Sauber/Audi in July 2025.
After concluding his responsibilities at Red Bull at the end of 2024, he will take a gardening leave before assuming the position of team principal at Sauber, leading up to its conversion into the Audi works team at the start of the subsequent season.
Wheatley’s recruitment by Audi follows closely behind the manufacturer’s decision to dismiss the previous Sauber team CEO, Andreas Seidl, and the chairman of the board, Oliver Hoffmann, amid an internal conflict.
Audi has outlined the operation of the Binotto/Wheatley partnership, stating in a release that “a clear division of duties exists, and responsibilities are clearly defined,” noting that they will “jointly take responsibility for the success of the racing team” and will “report directly to [Audi CEO] Gernot Dollner in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Sauber Motorsport AG.”
Binotto, serving as team COO and CTO, will oversee the Audi facility in Hinwil and the technical department, which includes the design and production of new Audi vehicles, along with the engine plant in Neuburg.
Wheatley will manage the F1 team during events and act as the media representative for the team.
“The decision to implement a dual management team is part of the restructuring of the operational framework for the future factory team, coinciding with Audi’s full acquisition of the Sauber Group,” the Audi statement indicated.
“I am thrilled that we have secured Jonathan Wheatley as Team Principal for our upcoming Formula 1 team,” remarked Gernot Dollner.

Wheatley expressed, “I take great pride in my eighteen-year journey with Red Bull Racing, leaving with cherished memories.
“However, the opportunity to actively contribute to Audi’s entry into Formula 1 as the head of the factory team is an exhilarating prospect, and I eagerly anticipate this challenge.
“I am also pleased to be collaborating with Mattia, whom I have known for years and believe is the ideal partner for this exciting endeavor.”
Binotto added: “Having known Jonathan for many years, I hold him in high regard as a knowledgeable and dedicated motorsport professional.
