Newcastle is in the process of pursuing England defender Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace and has initiated negotiations for a deal that could provide Eddie Howe with the centre-back he has been aiming for throughout the summer.

It is believed that Newcastle may need to offer around £60m for Guéhi following his standout performances at Euro 2024, but Howe has identified centre-back and right wing as crucial positions for bolstering the team.

The Newcastle manager has had a sustained interest in Milan’s right-sided German centre-back Malick Thiaw; however, as discussions with the Serie A club have stalled, the focus has shifted towards Guéhi.

The 24-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract, is expected to pair with Sven Botman once Howe’s left-sided centre-back recovers from a serious knee injury around Christmas, although he may initially collaborate with Switzerland’s Fabian Schär.

Negotiations are still in the early phases, and a deal is far from finalized for a player whom executives at St James’ Park believe could draw substantial offers from clubs across Europe.

Newcastle is nearing a deal to sign Denmark Under-21 forward William Osula from Sheffield United for an initial £10m. Osula, who turns 21 on Sunday, was on the periphery of Chris Wilder’s first team last season, but Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s sporting director, reportedly sees immense potential in him, capable of playing across the front line while also supporting Howe’s Swedish striker Alexander Isak.
