“Amen, amen, I say to you, you are seeking me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were satisfied. Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him, the Father, God, has placed his seal” (John 6:26-27).
These verses are extracted from the Gospel of John, one of the four gospel accounts in the New Testament. While the exact authorship remains unknown, it is predominantly ascribed to the Apostle John, according to Catholic Answers.
According to Curtis Martin, the founder and CEO of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), this passage reveals a significant moment that resonates deeply with our human desires and illustrates the essence of our faith journey.

Martin emphasized that “the Eucharist represents the true and substantial body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ.”
He noted that the verses reflect the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, further elaborating on that miracle.

“The crowd, after witnessing and experiencing the miracle of the loaves and fishes, follows Jesus across the sea,” Martin pointed out.
“However, their intentions are uplifted by Jesus Himself, who invites them to seek not just perishable food, but food that endures for eternal life.”
These verses act as “a powerful reminder for all of us,” Martin explains, urging individuals to “reflect on the reasons we follow Christ.”

“Are we attracted to Him mainly for what He can provide for us, or are we sincerely pursuing and developing a relationship with Him?” he queried.
“And during our attendance at church, are we merely going through the motions, or are we genuinely engaged with the source and summit – the mystery and miracle of the Eucharist?”

The message from Christ to “not labor for food that perishes” should encourage a shift in focus from the temporal to the eternal, Martin asserts.
“In our society, where immediate gratification is often favored, this message runs counter to the norm and urges us to elevate our sights from the temporary to the timeless,” he remarked.

Through his work with college students via FOCUS, Martin has encountered numerous young adults searching for meaning and purpose.
According to him, many students find themselves “caught in the chaos of academic and societal pressures, social expectations, and the chase for success as dictated by worldly measures.”

However, Martin noted that “there exists a profound, often unexpressed, yearning for something greater.”
This longing, he asserts, is precisely what Jesus addresses in these verses.

According to Martin, this truth will “not only transform our lives but will also serve as beacons of hope and nourishment for a world in dire need of the bread of life.”
