- George Baker was ecstatic after Get It’s triumph in the Stewards Cup
- Henry De Bromhead observed with pride as Term Of Endearment shone
- Mick Appleby reaffirmed his status as one of the top trainers once again
Glorious Goodwood concluded on a high note Saturday as Get It raced ahead to clinch the Stewards Cup, capturing the final lucrative prize of the event.
Over the five-day festival, 37 races showcased remarkable performances, while notable discussions emerged as the horses charged down the Sussex Downs in chase of Get It, an impressive 40-1 longshot trained by a thrilled George Baker.
SUPER SATURDAY
While it’s easy to get swept away by Group One racing, treasured handicaps hold a vital place in the calendar, especially the Coral Stewards’ Cup, established in 1840, with a generous prize purse of £250,000 this Saturday.
Baker’s joy was palpable as Get It turned every moment into victory. Having grown up in the area, this win resonated deeply with him, especially after Get It had shown promising form in Bahrain last winter, making this triumph all the more special.
‘I’ve been coming here my entire life, watching Stewards’ Cups since I was six or seven — which feels like a long time ago!’ Baker remarked. ‘This race holds a very special place in my heart, and the racecourse is a significant aspect of our lives. It has always represented a special week for me, long before I took up training.’

HOORAY FOR HENRY
Even as the top Irish trainer Henry de Bromhead was likely focused on Galway, he made his debut at Goodwood on Saturday as Term Of Endearment claimed victory in the Group Two Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes.
This talented filly had previously won an impressive race at York in May, granting Rachael Blackmore her first Group race win on the Flat, with even brighter prospects ahead. Jockey Billy Lee is convinced the mare is still on an upward trajectory, and her owners, the Acheson family, could soon revel in high-level success.

KIERAN KEEPS GOING
Being the first rider for John and Thady Gosden resembles being a striker for Manchester United — when goals are lacking, inquiries arise and the scrutiny intensifies with each opportunity missed.
Kieran Shoemark faced a challenging initiation after stepping into Frankie Dettori’s former role last year, and his performance, especially on Emily Upjohn in the Group One Nassau Stakes on Thursday, sparked considerable discussion.
Nonetheless, Shoemark displayed commendable resilience by focusing solely on his race, delivering a brilliant front-running ride aboard Lead Artist in the Group Three Thoroughbred Stakes. This colt has the potential to be one of Gosden’s finest, and Shoemark is ready for the challenge.

FILLIES TO THE FORE
Thursday marked a noteworthy day for scouts, as the events could unveil potential candidates for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and next year’s Epsom Oaks. Under Aidan O’Brien’s training, Opera Singer and Dreamy are exceptional prospects who received exemplary guidance from Ryan Moore, recognized as the world’s leading jockey.

MAGIC MICK

Mick Appleby (right) reiterated his status as one of the premier trainers in the industry
Mick Appleby once again validated his status as a premier trainer. He sent seven entrants to Goodwood, achieving an impressive performance record reading — 1, 1, 3, 2, 1, 1, 3. With Big Evs and Big Mojo winning Group Two races, it’s clear that Appleby is destined for top-level victories soon.
