Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, referred to Julian Alvarez as “absolutely our player,” while steering clear of inquiries regarding the future of the Argentine striker.
Alvarez has been heavily rumored to be transferring to Atletico Madrid, and Guardiola was questioned about the 24-year-old following City’s 4-2 victory over Chelsea at Ohio Stadium.
“No updates. I have nothing to add. He will return,” Guardiola stated.
Alvarez, whose contract with City extends until 2028, has been representing Argentina at the Paris Olympics. He mentioned before their elimination by France that he would make a decision once the Games concluded.
Guardiola continued: “I rely on him, but he remarked in the news that decisions will be made collectively. For now, he must rest, and when he feels ready to return, he will come back.
“I’m certain that when he returns, I will embrace him and congratulate him for the Copa America, for the Olympics, and we’ll begin working together. That is the reality.
“As for what occurs in the meantime, I have countless other matters to focus on concerning the team.
“Next week, we compete for our first trophy of the season [the Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley]. In two weeks, we’ll be back at Stamford Bridge; that is my sole focus.”
City concluded their US tour without facing any significant injuries, with Guardiola noting that Rico Lewis was substituted against Chelsea due to cramping, and goalkeeper Ederson was left out because of “niggles.”
Both players are anticipated to be available for the Community Shield match against United next week, prior to the beginning of the Premier League season with a game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
