Conor Gallagher, the Chelsea midfielder, has reached an agreement to join Atletico Madrid.
Last week, the Blues accepted a £33m bid from the Spanish club, but there were considerable doubts regarding the England international’s willingness to take the step.
However, on Sunday night, Gallagher, 24, informed Atletico officials that he is eager to make the transition.
The England international is anticipated to travel soon to finalize his medical examination and sign the contract, marking the end of his 18-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had proposed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, but Gallagher found this deal unfavorable due to both its duration and the diminished role offered within the squad.
A clear disconnect arose between Gallagher and Chelsea, as he was seen as a poor fit for new manager Enzo Maresca’s possession-oriented strategy and was not expected to be a regular starter under the Italian.
Having participated in five matches at Euro 2024, Gallagher has less than a year remaining on his current Chelsea contract.
Chelsea preferred to offload Gallagher to a foreign club rather than an English rival, facilitating a discounted deal for Atletico.
