State Senator Kristen McDonald Privet has been declared the winner of the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

In 2023, Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., announced he would not pursue re-election, making the seat he has held since 2012 available in this election cycle.

The primary featured three contenders for the nomination: Kristen McDonald Privet, Matt Collier, and Pamela Pugh.

Collier had previously held the position of mayor in Flint, Michigan during the late 1980s.

Pugh is currently the president of the Michigan State Board of Education.

McDonald Privet is the first female state senator representing the Great Lakes Bay Region.

In addition, the state senator has served as the executive director of Michigan Head Start, as well as the chief of staff for Michigan’s Department of Education, and vice president of the Skillman Foundation.
