Carl Marlinga triumphed over three other candidates in a fiercely contested Democratic primary for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District and is set to face incumbent Republican Rep. John James in November.
According to the Associated Press, Marlinga claimed victory against Diane Young, Emily Busch, and Tiffany Tilley.
Marlinga, a former judge, entered the race aiming for a rematch with James, highlighting his extensive experience as both a prosecutor and a judge during his campaign.

“After decades of standing firm for the right reasons, even facing some turbulent press, doing what’s just often leads to success,” Marlinga expressed to Michigan Advance. “I believe most voters in this county would describe my character that way.”
Tilley, co-vice president on the State Board of Education since 2018, campaigned on gun safety, sharing personal stories of family members lost to gun violence.
“No other candidate in this race matches my background, experience, or passion for advocacy,” Tilley declared to Michigan Advance. “I’ve been fighting for people for over two decades, a claim most candidates can’t make.”

Young, who possesses a background in financial planning, advocated for tax and welfare reforms in Congress while emphasizing the importance of strengthening Social Security.
“I understand the challenges everyday people face,” Young shared with Michigan Advance. “From raising their kids to securing their retirement, Social Security and Medicare are vital for ensuring a safe and dignified retirement.”
Busch, who previously ran for the state House in 2022, also focused strongly on gun safety, recounting her experience of picking up her son from school after he survived the tragic Oxford High School shooting in 2021 and referencing the shooting at Michigan State University last year.

“The shooting at Michigan State University affected the entire state deeply,” Busch expressed to the Michigan Advance. “That was the moment that compelled me to run for Congress.”
**The winner** will face James, who ran uncontested in the Republican primary, in the general election this November. James narrowly won the 2022 race against Marlinga, with a margin of 48.8% to 48.3%.
The Cook Political Report categorizes Michigan’s 10th Congressional District as “leaning” Republican.
