Race walkers Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley have contributed to Australia’s medal count by securing bronze in the mixed marathon walk relay at the Paris Olympics.
Montag was in fourth place during the critical final moments but surged ahead of Italy’s Antonella Palmisano to finish third, trailing behind Spain and Ecuador.
The gold medal was claimed by Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez, while Brian Daniel Pintado and Glenda Morejon took home the silver.
This marks Montag’s second bronze of the Games, having previously secured third place in the 20km women’s walk last week.
She also becomes the first Australian woman since sprinting icon Raelene Boyle in Munich 1972 to win two athletics medals in a single Olympics.
More to come.
