Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., responded to MSNBC’s Katy Tur, who pressed him repeatedly about his views on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro after claims emerged that he cautioned Kamala Harris against including Shapiro on the presidential ticket.
During an MSNBC segment on Wednesday, Fetterman spoke about Harris’s recent selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Tur referenced a prior Politico report indicating that he had advised the campaign shortly before that Shapiro was overly focused on “his own personal ambitions” to be a viable candidate.
“So, is that accurate? Did you or your team express concerns about Shapiro to the Harris campaign?” Tur inquired.
“No, I never instructed anyone on my team or anyone to do that. So that’s simply not true,” Fetterman replied.

Tur followed up with, “Did you express any concerns about Shapiro potentially being chosen?”
“No, my [only] issue with the current governor has nothing to do with what has been discussed or any public issues mentioned in that article,” Fetterman responded, noting the sole conflict stemmed from their service on Pennsylvania’s Board of Pardons together.
Later, Tur pointed out that during Shapiro’s speech at a Pennsylvania rally introducing Walz as the vice-presidential candidate, Fetterman didn’t stand or applaud.
“Is this simply an old political rivalry within the same state or are there more significant policy issues, such as the ones you’ve alluded to regarding sentencing?” Tur asked.
“If you’d like to inquire, you can ask him,” Fetterman stated.
“I’ll ask you both,” Tur interjected.

“But I thought I was here to discuss the current situation,” Fetterman continued.
Tur then turned the conversation to allegations that Harris was dissuaded from choosing Shapiro due to his Jewish heritage and his pro-Israel stance amidst the conflict with Hamas.

“I really don’t understand why we’re discussing a decision that has already been made. I was very clear that the vice president is fully capable of selecting whoever they wish. She has access to unlimited funding and all Democratic expertise, and she made her choice. That’s where we stand now,” Fetterman asserted.

“And [Walz] is currently on stage in Wisconsin, so why are we focusing on this irrelevant stuff? I really can’t comprehend that,” he concluded.
