Residents of the predominantly Democratic area in Brooklyn, New York, are expressing their frustration as they feel unsafe venturing outdoors or utilizing city parks due to the disorder attributed to a large shelter for undocumented immigrants.
Once a picturesque and relatively secure neighborhood, Clinton Hill is now descending into turmoil as it accommodates a mega-complex established by New York City for thousands of migrants.
Community members gathered on Sunday to voice their concerns regarding the rising violence, increasing litter, and frequent altercations linked to the substantial shelter.
“We need our voices to be heard. This has to stop,” said Renee Collymore, the Democratic liaison who coordinated the protest. “This isn’t about being anti-migrant; it’s about prioritizing safety.”

The facility, a major emergency migrant shelter situated in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill, consists of several industrial warehouses. Opened in July 2023, it serves approximately 4,000 migrants. This large-scale setup has raised serious community concerns regarding crime, noise, waste, and overcrowded public areas.
“We have been noticing the increase in violence on our streets and in the neighborhood for quite some time,” a local resident commented to a local ABC news outlet.
Residents have recently mobilized to demand action following a series of incidents linked to a violent street gang from Venezuela. Two fatalities and one critical injury occurred near the mega shelter complex on Sunday.

“It feels as if the entire area is no longer accessible to the community; even our parks are off-limits,” another resident said.
“We’ve been urging the mayor to address the increasing violence; this situation was bound to happen,” a different resident noted.
The complex now hosts “the largest concentration of migrants outside of Randall’s Island,” as stated by NYPD Assistant Chief Scott Henderson, who oversees Brooklyn North.
In reaction to the recent murders, Adams declared, “These individuals pose a great threat.” He stated, “We are dealing with violent persons who do not reflect the vast majority of those arriving as asylum seekers.”

In June, an individual from the Clinton Hill Shelter was charged in connection with a stabbing that left the victim in critical condition.
Complaints from residents surged in April after the city designated new shelter facilities for additional migrants.
“Our community cannot sustain this, yet neither can they,” lamented 74-year-old Mary Chang.
“We are ground zero for the city’s mishandling of the migration crisis, and we deserve better,” proclaimed resident Alia McKee.
The area’s council member, Crystal Hudson, appealed to Mayor Adams for increased funding to manage the influx of migrants.
“[T]he reality is that an increase in population necessitates more resources for our communities… My office and the residents have been requesting your help for nearly a year with little response,” she conveyed.

A spokesperson for the mayor mentioned during that period that the city was facing a growing challenge daily.
“We are managing hundreds of arrivals in our city every single day,” she stated, while also addressing the 65,000 currently being accommodated in the system.
