A man from Abilene, Texas, who was arrested last year linked by DNA to a cold case from 1982, has passed away while on bond and awaiting trial.
According to the Abilene Police Department’s post on Facebook, Billye Brown, 66, was the prime suspect in a cold case investigation involving the 1982 slayings of 30-year-old Susanna Flores Brown and her 8-year-old daughter, Franchesca Antionette Martinez. He died on July 27, 2024.
In March 1982, the Abilene Police Department was called to the scene of a double homicide in the 1300 block of South Bowie Street.
Upon arrival, they discovered both victims had been killed.

Court documents obtained by KTAB in Abilene reveal that officers found the mother lying face up on the floor, suffering from multiple injuries, with a lamp cord around her neck. Additionally, she had feces smeared on her body, which investigators believed did not originate from her.
The daughter was discovered also on the floor, part of her body under the bed, with a phone cord around her neck.
The investigation led detectives to conclude that both victims likely died from strangulation.

Brown recounted to investigators that he brought home chicken for dinner and shared a meal with the family before leaving for work. He later claimed that upon his return, he discovered the bodies of Franchesca and Susanna. Documentation indicated that he did not seem “overly upset” about their deaths and even made jokes.
Further investigation revealed that Brown and Susanna had ongoing marital issues, and acquaintances portrayed him as “controlling and abusive.”
For 41 years, this case remained unsolved.

As investigators sought to gain more information, Brown declined further interviews and refused to undergo a DNA test.
In January of last year, DNA found in Susanna’s mouth was believed to be linked to Brown. By July 2023, authorities secured a warrant for a DNA swab from Brown, during which he reportedly remarked, “I think I just signed my death warrant.”
He faced two murder allegations in October 2023 but was subsequently released on a $200,000 bond.
