Former footballer Joey Barton has refuted allegations of making harmful communications concerning social media comments aimed at pundit Eni Aluko.
Barton, 41, appeared at Warrington Magistrates’ Court facing charges of sending an indecent or offensive message between January 3 and 8 regarding the ex-women’s football star.
The former midfielder for Manchester City, Burnley, and Rangers verified his name, address, and date of birth to deputy senior district judge Tan Ikram, and pleaded not guilty.
He was instructed to attend Liverpool Crown Court on August 27.
Judge Ikram stated: “I am granting you conditional bail with the stipulation that you will not mention Eni Aluko on any social media, whether directly or indirectly, or by implication.
“I am enforcing this measure to prevent any further offences.”
Barton acknowledged the judge as he exited the courtroom with his defense attorney Richard Derby.
Aluko, who represented Chelsea and England, scored 33 international goals in 102 appearances before retiring in 2020 and launching a broadcasting career.
Barton began his playing career in 2002 at Manchester City and concluded it in 2017 at Burnley.
He also had stints with Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, and Marseille, and made one appearance for England.
Hailing from Huyton, Merseyside, he transitioned to management with Fleetwood Town in 2018 before taking the helm at Bristol Rovers in 2021.
He departed from Rovers in 2023 and has not resumed a managerial role since.
