R&B artist Mýa has no regrets about her seven-year journey of celibacy – in fact, she advocates for it.
At 44 years old, she appeared on the “Way Up with Angela Yee” show and revealed that during her time of celibacy, she experienced heightened “mental clarity.”
“Refraining from intimacy changed my perspective,” Mýa explained about her experience. “It shifted my focus away from the urgency to be in a relationship, get married, or have children, which society often imposes on us. I believe there is immense pressure on women to fulfill these expectations.”

Mýa also emphasized the significance of self-love throughout this phase.
“Love is a wonderful thing, and the world could always use more of it, but it starts with oneself,” she shared. “I need to prioritize self-love over seeking validation from others.”
“Refraining from intimacy changed my perspective.”
She wrapped up her thoughts by stating, “This was all about reconditioning myself. I considered it essential because it is a deeply spiritual experience. One must be discerning if seeking better outcomes, which began with me taking a break from that side of my life.”

Mýa noted that early in her career, being labeled a “sex-symbol” was a factor that led her to practice celibacy.

“People say a lot about you, and you absorb it from a young age,” she reflected. “The image that comes with it often contradicts your true self, which complicates dating and social interactions, especially with other celebrities.”
Mýa added, “Many sacred aspects of life should remain private until there’s a solid foundation established, and even then, it carries risks. I choose to keep that part of my life out of the public eye.”
