As Carrie Underwood gears up to take over Katy Perry’s role on the “American Idol” judging panel, the country music star revealed a challenge she anticipates.
When asked about her approach as a judge on the well-loved singing competition, she confessed, “I have a significant issue … I can’t tell a lie.”
“I believe I’ll be quite forthright but aim to be constructive and supportive,” Underwood shared with “Good Morning America” prior to her debut.

Underwood expressed that while she intends to be truthful, she does not aim to be “too harsh” on “American Idol” participants.
“Just ask my kids,” she joked, referencing her two sons, whom she shares with her husband, former NHL player Mike Fisher.

The “Before He Cheats” performer shared her feelings about returning to “American Idol,” reflecting on her history since winning the fourth season in 2005.
“It feels like coming home,” Underwood remarked. “Many of the people still involved in the show were present when I competed.”
“Having experienced both sides, I hope to provide valuable insight and assistance… ”

The official announcement was made early Thursday, confirming Underwood’s role as Katy Perry’s successor on the forthcoming season of “American Idol.”
“This upcoming season celebrates 20 years since Carrie won the nation’s affection on ‘Idol’ and launched her multi-GRAMMY Award-winning career. As a former contestant and influential musical figure, she offers a uniquely valuable perspective on one of television’s most beloved programs,” Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, stated in a press release.

“This represents a full-circle moment for both the show and the audiences who have been engaged for over twenty years. Welcome back, Carrie.”
“I transitioned from anonymity to having tens of millions of viewers tuning in,” she stated in a video announcing her new position. “I’m proud of what I achieved during my time on the show and very proud of everything that has followed.”
Auditions for the new season are set to commence on August 12.
In addition, Underwood recently announced the extension of her “Reflection” Las Vegas residency at Resorts World, adding a series of shows through spring 2025.

She initiated her residency in December 2021, and due to its popularity, has extended it multiple times.
It’s yet unclear how her Las Vegas performances will impact her judging duties on the talent show.
The “Jesus, Take the Wheel” artist has been associated with “Idol” since she triumphed over Bo Bice to clinch the title in 2005.
