The seven golds ties the USA with Australia for the most in swimming, but the United States boasts a significantly higher medal count, having achieved just 17 total medals.

Earlier in the Games, Finke aimed for consecutive wins in the 800m freestyle, but finished with a silver medal, falling just over half a second short.

At the halfway mark, Finke was already ahead by half a second and surpassing the world record pace. However, he turned on the speed, extending his lead to 1.3 seconds with 500 meters remaining, and continued to distance himself from the world record pace.
