• Australia’s men’s basketball team has been eliminated from the Olympics
  • They squandered a 24-point lead, falling to Serbia
  • This marks the end of Patty Mills’ Olympic journey

Nikola Jokic has the final say as Serbia mounted a stunning comeback, overcoming a 24-point deficit to defeat the Boomers 95-90 in overtime, advancing to the Olympic semi-finals.

In what might be his last appearance in the Games, Patty Mills played a pivotal role, showcasing his skills as Australia surged ahead before hitting a crucial shot to level the game and send it into overtime.

However, trailing by three in the closing moments, the reigning NBA MVP took charge with two decisive stops and baskets to ensure victory on Monday.

Mills finished the match with 26 points, while Jokic recorded 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists, leading Serbia to score the last eight points of the game.

Mills had an explosive stretch around quarter time, contributing significantly to a 20-point surge that put Australia ahead by 22.

He was on fire, making seven of nine attempts in that period, many of which were difficult pull-up jumpers, showing he still has plenty of talent at 35 years old.

At one point, Mills (18 points) was outscoring Serbia (17) single-handedly, and Australia shot an impressive 80 percent in a first half that felt almost too good to be true.

Duop Reath’s three-pointer extended the lead to 24 points, but Serbia quickly adjusted, with Jokic starting to dominate as the crowd jeered Aleksa Avramovic for his antics.

Marko Guduric’s three-pointer reduced the deficit to 11 points, and with the crowd chanting MVP, Jokic made free throws to cut their halftime margin to 12.

Seizing momentum in the third quarter, Serbia capitalized on Australian turnovers, with Bogdan Bogdanovic hitting back-to-back baskets that quickly narrowed the lead to just four.

Mills slipped on a critical play after a timeout, followed by Dobric’s three-pointer that brought Serbia within one point.

Australia’s offensive rhythm faltered, allowing Bogdanovic to give Serbia a 61-60 lead with three minutes left in the quarter.

The quarter ended with Serbia outscoring Australia 25-11, with more free throws from Jokic and a defensive stop giving them a two-point lead as Australia’s shooting percentage dipped to 55.

Jack McVeigh kept Australia close with seven points in the fourth, and a corner three from Giddey evened the score with three minutes remaining.

They managed to hit a tough floater but missed another shot that could have given them the lead in the closing moments.

With 40 seconds left, Mills attempted a shot that hit the back of the rim and missed.

Landale fouled Vasilije Micic with nine seconds remaining. The Serbian missed his first shot but converted the second, giving Serbia a two-point lead.

Mills grabbed a loose ball and made a tough basket in traffic, sending the game into overtime amidst pleas for a technical foul by the Boomers bench when the Serbian coach called a timeout without any remaining.

McVeigh (13 points) and Josh Giddey (25 points, five rebounds, four assists) helped Australia surge ahead by three in overtime, but Jokic’s strong defense thwarted their efforts, ending successive possessions.

He then scored four consecutive points, and Giddey’s inbound pass was intercepted when they were trailing by three, ultimately sealing Australia’s fate.

Giddey appeared to be injured in his lower leg during the final play, limping off the court as the final buzzer sounded.
