Michael Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, has raised concerns regarding Team USA’s decision to appoint Coco Gauff as a flagbearer.

The tennis player partnered with LeBron James at the forefront of Team USA’s opening ceremony procession, carrying the flag along the Seine River on Friday evening.

Currently the US Open champion, Gauff is also a strong contender for the women’s tennis gold medal in Paris.

However, Johnson has questioned if she was the most suitable choice to represent Team USA, citing her sport as a factor.

The 56-year-old, who clinched gold medals in the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympics, feels another athlete deserved the honor.

In remarks made on the BBC, Johnson expressed: ‘I’m somewhat disappointed with the USA team’s selection. I had hoped for a Simone Biles or an athlete from a traditional Olympic discipline. I believe they opted for popularity instead.’

He further remarked, ‘Unless Simone opted out due to her preparations for competition, which is a possibility.’

Coco Gauff has made history as the youngest flag bearer for her country at a summer Olympics and the first tennis player to bear the flag.

Simone Biles chose not to attend the opening ceremony on Friday, as she is gearing up for gymnastics competition beginning Sunday.

Biles’ parents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, clarified her absence during a discussion with NBC News’ Hoda Kotb and Snoop Dogg.

‘Her first competition is on Sunday,’ Nellie stated, ‘which is the Women’s Qualifier. Naturally, she needs to conserve her energy before that event.’

The 27-year-old was suggested to avoid the lengthy ceremony alongside her teammates Suni Lee, Hezly Rivera, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey.

Nellie further commented, ‘She is feeling really good. I spoke to her this morning, and she’s doing great. She’s in a really good place.’
